Selected projects
Finding data that’s thisclose, but somehow not available.
Daylight Data can answer the questions that you know are buried somewhere in the data that’s out there, but somehow isn’t visible. It all starts with a conversation about what you would like to see that you aren’t seeing now. The first call is free, and it’s just a conversation.
01 For Rebuild Local News
The Local Journalist Index
A first-of-its-kind, county-by-county measure of local journalists. Negotiated to use a never-before tapped set of data. Built the methodology, the dataset, and the analysis behind it.
02 Through JournalList
trust.txt
Created a standard for publisher transparency online. Now working with the International Press Telecommunications Council to standardize trust.txt across all sites where trust matters.
About
I’m Scott Yates. For twenty years I’ve built things at the intersection of data and journalism — companies, standards, and now Daylight Data.
I founded MyTrafficNews and was awarded a US Patent. I also founded LgDb (now BillTrack50) and BlogMutt (now Verblio). I’m also the world leader in trying to fix Daylight Saving Time, where I’ve been called to testify to the U.S. Senate and The Daily Show.
The thread connecting all of it: I like the projects where the right answer isn’t obvious until you build the thing that makes it obvious. Daylight Data is where I take that approach to client work for organizations that need someone to think about the data and the goals at the same time.
Have a complicated data question?
If you’ve been percolating an idea about a way to use data in a way that you think could dramatically change perceptions and establish you as a thought leader, but haven’t been able to make it happen… well… we should talk. The first call is free, and it’s just a conversation.
